Approximately 50% of the escalators and moving walkways have been installed more than 20 years ago; therefore, they no longer meet the European safety standards.
If not updated to the current state-of-the-art security there will be an increase in accidents and injuries.
The EN 115-2:2010 provides rules for the improvement of existing escalators and moving walkways in order to achieve a level of safety equivalent to that of new installations.
The law considers the improvement of existing escalators and moving walkways for:
a) users;
b) maintenance and inspection personnel;
c) people who are not using escalators and moving walkways (but who are in their immediate vicinity);
d) authorized personnel.
Maintenance companies and/or inspection bodies must inform the owners about the safety of their systems, suggesting the modernizing and upgrading work or complete replacement of the facilities.
